Broaden Your Horizons

 with the Orillia Silver Band!

“Prospects”Concert

Prospects–This fall, the Orillia Silver Band would love to invite you to an evening of entertainment that gives a musical view from many of the world’s most scenic prospects.

Neil Barlow, the band’s music director, says that the concert is designed to provide wonderful and engaging sounds from a wide spectrum of world music styles.

The concert opens with the brilliant 20th Century overture “HjalarLjod” by Norwegian composer Eivind Groven, sampling the sounds of shepherds singing in the Norwegian mountains overlooking the North Sea.

Jonas Feldman, the band’s principal cornetist, is featured in a wonderful rendition of James Curnow’s brilliant “Concertpiece for Cornet”.

In addition, the band will present a performance of Gustav Holst’s “A Moorside Suite” from northwestern England.   This sweeping work is one of the cornerstones of modern brass band literature.

The centrepiece of the band’s “Prospects” concert is the towering six-movement work known as “Windows of the World” by Peter Graham.  This piece features soloists from all of the major sections of the band (including unforgettable percussion artistry!)playing “world music” styles from Latin America, Japan, Celtic Scotland, Africa, and North American jazz/funk.

And, along the way through this journey to great world prospects, the band will present the heart-warming “Ashokan Farewell” by Jay Ungar and the uplifting “Light of the World” by Dean Goffin.

Please plan to attend this extraordinary concert - and bring a music-loving friend! Your help and encouragement of the band is always greatly appreciated!

Orillia Silver Band presents Inner Light - Featuring Pianist Kyung-A Lee

“Inner Light” – Pianist Kyung-A Lee joins Maestro Neil Barlow and Orillia Silver Band for a one-of-a-kind event. Music featured in the concert showcase the incomparable inner light of composers from several cultures over several centuries.

As a concert piano soloist, Kyung-A Lee delights audiences with such diverse offerings as The Lark from Mikail Glinka, the “Revolutionary” Etude and the Scherzo No. 2 in Bb minor by Frederic Chopin and the Prelude in G minor Op. 23 No. 5 by Sergei Rachmaninoff.

During the concert, Ms. Lee is joined by two outstanding woodwind soloists from the Orillia Silver Band – with Karen Richards performing on flute and Kim Barlow playing the clarinet. Together as a trio ensemble, these wonderful performers will offer a soul-stirring version of Clair de Lune by Claude Debussy and the riveting Rhapsody on Carmen by Michael Webster (based on themes from Bizet’s opera “Carmen”).

The Orillia Silver Band has two wonderful works for band to offer during the concert as well - Prelude on Tallis by Peter Graham is a sparkling interpretation of a famous theme by Renaissance composer Thomas Tallis, and the Little Suite for Brass Op. 80 by British composer Malcolm Arnold is a seminal 20th Century composition created specifically for brass band.

Finally, Kyung-A Lee and the Orillia Silver Band team up together to provide the showcase jewel of the entire concert: the Piano Concerto No. 2 in F major Op. 102 by Dimitri Shostakovich, with accompaniment for brass band arranged by our own Neil Barlow. This monumental work by Russia’s most renowned composer from the 20th Century is sure to inspire and enthrall the listener.

The Orillia Silver Band Presents: Movies and More!

The Orillia Silver Band would love to invite you to an evening of musical entertainment from the world of the cinema. Our Movies and More Concert takes place on Saturday, June 07, 2025, 7:00 pm at the St. Paul’s Centre in Orillia.

Selections include such favourites as highlights from the recent James Bond remake of “Casino Royale”, the beautiful love theme from “Out of Africa” and the towering overture by John Williams to the 1970’s western “The Cowboys”. The band invites you to enjoy the musical skills of some of its own soloists on this evening as well. Trumpeters Robin Watson and Debbie Silverthorne will play a great arrangement of a Count Basie tune called Duet. And Michele McCall, the band’s flugelhornist, will present Winton Marsalis’ version of the Hoagy

Carmichael tune Skylark.

Other cinematic fun included the main theme from the ever-popular film Forrest Gump, the flying theme from E.T., and the rousing victory theme from the Rocky series. Another bit of John Williams brilliance is the march from the war-comedy film 1941.

Beyond the music itself, the concert will include simultaneous projected pictures and video clips of movies where the music was used. This will take us all down “memory lane” as we remember the thrill of the complete cinematic experiences.

Please put this exciting concert on your calendar. Your help and encouragement of the band is always greatly appreciated!

Theme: From Turtle Island to Palestine Part 1 of 2 - Conversations on Settler Colonialism and Genocide: Impacts on our Land, Health and the Environment
Guest Speakers: Local Palestinian and First Nation speakers
Documentary website: https://whereolivetreesweep.com/

Description:
"Where Olive Trees Weep" offers a searing window into the struggles and resilience of the Palestinian people under Israeli occupation. It explores themes of loss, trauma, and the quest for justice.

We follow, among others, Palestinian journalist and therapist Ashira Darwish, grassroots activist Ahed Tamimi, and Israeli journalist Amira Hass. We witness Dr. Gabor Maté offering trauma-healing work for a group of women who have been tortured in Israeli prisons.

Ancient landscapes bear deep scars, having witnessed the brutal reality of ancestral land confiscation, expulsions, imprisonment, home demolitions, water deprivation, and denial of basic human rights. Yet, through the veil of oppression, we catch a glimpse of resilience—deep roots that have carried the Palestinian people through decades of darkness and shattered lives.

This emotional journey bares the humanity of the oppressed while grappling with the question: what makes the oppressor so ruthlessly blind to its own cruelty?

This year, the contest will be held in Ft. Wayne, Indiana during April 2025 and will include many competing bands from across the continent.

Neil Barlow, the band’s music director invites you to a concert that will include the selections that the band will perform for the contest along with many other fine pieces of music. Our Contest Preview Concert takes place on Saturday, March 22, 2025, 7:00 pm at the St. Paul’s Centre in Orillia. Concert tickets are available from the Orillia Silver Band website www.orilliasilverband.com and at the door.

Opening the concert evening will be the famous Fanfare from La Peri by Paul Dukas. Also on the concert are the haunting Adagio for Strings by Samual Barber and the beautiful Shepherd’s Song, a lovely French folk song arranged by Goff Richards.

Headlining the concert is the wonderful Laude by composer James Curnow. This monumental work for brass and percussion is the obligatory “test piece” which all bands will perform for the contest.
The concert includes the classic work Little Suite for Band by the British composer Malcolm Arnold. And for lovers of compositions in the pop genre from the 1970s, the band will perform a great arrangement of the tune Music by guitarist John Miles.
