Please join us for a performance of Jazz musician Paul Winter’s Missa Gaia (Earth Mass) this Sunday at 3pm in the sanctuary, presented by the St. Paul’s choir and friends. This special event is dedicated to celebrating Earth Day (April 22nd) and honoring the cherished memory of Rev. Karen Hilfman Millson.

Prepare to be captivated by a multi-media presentation that harmoniously blends choral and instrumental music, dance, readings and photography, creating an experience that echoes the spirit of our planet.

The 7-piece instrumental ensemble accompanying the choir features Peter Voisey playing soprano and 'sopranino' saxophones, Alyssa Wright on cello, Dan McCoy on pipe organ, along with piano, drums, tympani and a variety of percussion instruments all under the direction of conductor Blair Bailey.

Created in 1981 by jazz musician Paul Winter for the ecumenical cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City, Missa Gaia is a musical and visual celebration embracing all forms of life on earth.   Paul Winter writes, “I envisioned a celebration that was both ecological  and ecumenical, one that would embrace all life on earth.”

The musical stylings of this 'Earth Mass' range from traditional hymn-tunes to African inspired rhythms, ancient plainchant to Brazilian baiao folk rhythms, Classical-style choral writing to modern jazz harmonies.  Some of the choral movements are interspersed with pre-recorded whale songs, wolf and harp seal pup calls, and the haunting cry of the loon.  Accompanying the music will be interpretive dance and stunning visual images of nature and the environment projected on the large screens.

A free-will offering will be collected with the proceeds going to 'greening' initatives at St. Paul's.

With last year's raving success of this event, we are so excited to now offer this as an annual event! Our 2nd Annual Spring Into Bloom Tea and Luncheon Fundraiser aims to bring people together for a delicious brunch of sweet and savoury, live music, and fun, all for the paws! This event will be held at St. Paul's Church in the Banquet Hall (62 Peter Street North, Orillia) from 11:30am to 2pm on Sunday April 21st. We will also have a 50/50 raffle offered during the event, along with live music.

PARKING NOTE: In regards to parking, there are two large community lots also available – one is behind the TD bank across the road and the other is across from Carson’s funeral home on Coldwater Street. (Since it is Sunday, there will be a worship service in the Sanctuary from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. so the parking spaces will likely be busy.

Bio:
Dmytro Garbovskyi

Dmytro is an accomplished singer, specializing in opera, from Ukraine and a participant in Georgian’s Job Finding Club for Immigrants. He received the Immigrant Artist award for his dedication to supporting and uplifting the immigrant community in Simcoe County. In the midst of the conflict in Ukraine, Dmytro relocated to Canada. Although that meant leaving behind his artistic career, he excelled through the challenges and started work in construction to support his family.

Highlights:

• Organized several fundraising events to help those affected by the conflict in Ukraine. He helped raise $1,200 CAD per day to provide laptops for children facing challenges in accessing remote education.

• Founded the Facebook group, “Ukrainian Men in Barrie” to help foster connections and provide support for Ukrainian men navigating immigration. This platform is a valuable resource hub, and a space to connect and share experiences throughout the immigration journey.

• Volunteered his singing talents at cultural events including Holodomor Memorial Day and Independence Day of Ukraine.

The Orillia Vocal Ensemble under the direction of Blair Bailey and the Orillia Silver Band led by Neil Barlow presents:

Safety and Shelter Concert - a fundraising concert in support of the Green Haven Shelter for Women, which offers a much-needed service to the community by providing safety, shelter, and meaningful alternatives for individuals who experience gender-based violence.

For over 25 years Skydiggers' friends and fans have reunited over the holidays at Toronto’s Legendary Horseshoe Tavern to celebrate the season to the soundtrack of the band's distinctive rootsy Christmas tunes and Skydiggers' classics, and this year they're taking it on the road. "We've realized that the most moving moments of the season are more than just expressions of glad tidings and comfort and joy,” says Skydigger Andy Maize. “That there are moments of melancholy, regret and truth that are, in their own way, as much a part of the Christmas experience as any joyous carol. We want to put on a show that both celebrates the season while leaving room for quieter, more personal moments."

Join Scott Woods and his talented band for this uplifting 2-hour live family-friendly show, featuring lots of your favourite Christmas carols, fun fiddle tunes, as well as Traditional Country and Gospel songs.

Scott will keep you entertained with his keen wit, his prowess on the fiddle, and of course his trick fiddling.

Enjoy impressive guitar solos by ‘The Telecaster Master’ Steve Piticco, and smooth vocals and yodelling by Naomi Bristow, ‘Canada’s Yodelin’ Cowgirl. 18-year old Leo Stock, also known as ‘Spaghetti Legs” will demonstrate sensational step dancing, and Scott’s sister Kendra Woods Norris adds sweet harmonies, and levity to every show.

Since 2014, Dress for Success Orillia and Barrie has empowered women and non-binary individuals to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support, professional attire and the development tools to help them thrive in work and in life. We work with all women and non-binary individuals who are actively seeking employment, have scheduled job interviews, or have recently acquired a job or placement.

Green Haven Shelter for Women is a community-based, non-profit, charitable organization dedicated to women with or without dependent children who are experiencing gender-based violence in Orillia and area. We provide services including 24-hour safe emergency shelter; a crisis line; crisis counselling; information about community resources; emergency transportation; transitional housing support; and outreach and follow-up.

After last year's successful event, our organizations are partnering again for: “A Reading of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol in Support of Local Women”. The goal of the event is to raise much needed funds for our two charities; to make our community aware of who we are and what great work we do; and lastly, to have fun and get in the Christmas spirit!
