Our series of Community Forums for the month of June will be on the subject Canada 150: Challenges and Opportunities.
Canada is a blessed place. Sometimes we wonder where we’ve been and where we are going but that seems better than having a manifest destiny. Doesn’t it?
These Community Forums explore a slice of Canadian identity and invite us to reflect on the road ahead.
There will be two presentations, one on Friday afternoon at 2:00 pm and one on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 pm. Local artists will unveil their interpretation of one of St. Paul's beautiful and historic stained glass windows, and they will be accompanied by live music or other performance art. Two glasses of wine and an assortment of delectables are included in the $50 ticket price. Other Somniatis events have sold out; be sure to get your tickets early and avoid disappointment.
Orillia Community Kitchen presents a workshop on making healthy snacks. See flyer for details.
Set in the months leading up to, and just after, its incorporation on January 1, 1867, ORILLIA IS BORN is an original musical which reflects the frustrations of life at the time before Orillia enjoyed municipal water and sanitation, a proper high school building, any railroad service and many other conveniences now taken for granted. With the unexpected help of John A. Macdonald, who was working on confederation at the same time, local barber James Quinn rallies enough support to achieve incorporation as The Village of Orillia, and is elected its first Reeve. Along the way, he encounters some expected, and some unexpected opposition, but his wife, his precocious daughter and others offer support and advice which is sometimes humorous and sometimes serious. ORILLIA IS BORN is sprinkled with musical numbers providing encouragement, romance and humour. All in all, it’s a delightful look, loosely based on history, of life in Orillia circa 1866.
On Thursday, Friday and Saturday there will be a gourmet-quality dinner available by prior reservation for an additional $25; there will also be a cash wine bar available before and during the dinner. The menu for the dinner follows:
